Over the Thanksgiving weekend, my husband and I traveled to his home town of Russell, Manitoba to visit family. Of course, I took Flat Flora with me to get some pictures of joy and gratitude during the weekend. I was expecting the usual visiting, late nights and way too much eating including the classic turkey and pumpkin pie. I wasn’t disappointed! But what I didn’t expect was to come home with a picture of me and Flora with an Olympic gold medalist! Jon Montgomery, who won a gold medal in the skeleton event in the 2010 Olympics, is originally from Russell and he was home for the weekend. The town of Russell was dedicating a plaque in honor of Jon and so I jumped on the opportunity to get a photo!
This experience has reinforced for me the whole point of the Planting Joy Game. When you are focused on joy, the most interesting opportunities come your way. The other part of this story was that I had not been feeling well over the weekend (quite miserable in fact) and the last thing I felt like doing was searching out opportunities for joy. But, here is where the power of focus comes in…even though I felt miserable, I reminded myself that I wanted to feel better. I might not be feeling joyful but just setting the intention to get there helped me to recognize the opportunity when it presented itself. I went to the dedication and as a result had a chance to meet Jon, tell him about the Planting Joy Game and not only did he consent to a photo, he also signed Flora! You just never know what could happen when you change your focus. What have you noticed since you started playing the Planting Joy Game?
